MEM50006
Check operational capability of marine craft

Application

This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to conduct basic checks on the operational condition of engine and sail powered recreational vessels in or out of the water and relates to workplaces in which vessels are built, repaired, stored, sold and transported.

The scope of the unit is limited to identifying and reporting that a vessel is not of its 'normal' appearance at rest on its mooring or berth, or after being brought out of the water and includes basic operational checks similar to those routinely performed by machinery or vehicle operators.

This unit does not include an assessment of seaworthiness or durability but it does cover watertight integrity and the information would be reported to a supervisor or manager who would determine any further action.

Where operational checking of sails and sails systems is required unit MEM50007 Check operational capability of sails and sail operating equipment should also be selected.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1

Inspect hull, fittings and safety equipment

1.1

Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)

1.2

Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times

1.3

Inspect hull bungs and sea cocks for security and integrity

1.4

Check hull condition for holes, cracks and deterioration, and extent of marine growth

1.5

Check fittings and mountings for security and excessive corrosion

1.6

Complete reports of hull and fitting condition on approved workplace documentation and/or report verbally

1.7

Check vessel safety equipment availability against identified requirements and determine condition and report, as required

2

Check operating systems

2.1

Check propulsion, electrical power (including battery), steering, cable and line handling and domestic systems for correct fluid levels, fuel state, lubrication, and visually check for mechanical condition and leaks

2.2

Check communication equipment for operational status

3

Inspect cabin and domestic systems

3.1

Inspect cabin fittings for security and integrity

3.2

Check cabin and fittings for holes, cracks and deterioration

3.3

Check fittings and mountings for security and condition
